Hurricane.

She told me that he was shy, overly shy in fact. So shy that if I were to make direct eye contact for too long he would blush profusely and possibly leave the room. That day I noticed he kept stealing glances at me, just to see I’m sure. He was curious about me, as was everyone else in the room. Someone new, someone no one had ever met before. We had talked about what I might do when I met him, something very subtle. The one we had settled on was a simple hand shake. I was going to meet him and reach out to shake his hand, and as I took his hand in mine, I would slip my other hand over his hand and to his wrist, rubbing ever so tenderly. Just enough to make him uncomfortable, to make him want to pull away. But she said he wouldn’t, he was too polite to just rip his hand from mine. As I observed him that day, I changed my mind about wanting to make him squirm. Almost every person who encountered him did. The one boy who she said reminded her of me did more then anyone else. I wasn’t going to do that. I was kind, and kept my distance, even though normally that isn’t in my nature. Remember, everyone is fighting a hard battle, so be kind. Those words rung out in my mind that day, his battle happened to be more obvious then most others, so being kind to him was that much easier.

Myles, Twenty-Two.

The next morning I woke up to find Malinda back in her cot. Was it all a dream? Did she never leave, was I wrong? I then decided to stay awake that night and wait to see if she left again. I would stay up every night if I had to, I needed to know where she went.
The day dragged on and on, like it knew I was waiting for night to fall. But finally it did and Malinda and I both crawled into our beds, said our goodnights and both went to sleep. Well, she did... maybe. I turned my back to her and did my best to stay awake. About an hour into my stake out I heard her stirring. She moved about through the room for a few minutes and then left. That was my queue to get up and fallow after her. I could only guess where she was going...
I stole out of my room into the stairwell silently. I stood there for a moment and listened carefully. From what I could hear she was heading for the steps to the first floor. Quickly I raced down the stairs and waited in the hall for the sound of the door. Luckily for me the front door squeaks.
I went into the bathroom and sat on the window sill. Luck must of really been on my side that night, because the moon was full and washed blue light over everything. Including her running in the darkness over to the path leading to my tree. Down it she ran, every step quicker then the last, twice she nearly fell but regained her balance both times and continued on until I couldn't see her anymore. That’s when I made my move.

Myles, Twenty-One.

The next week went by horribly slow. Sometimes it felt as though minutes turned into hours, so you can only imagine how long a day must of felt to me. We spent time together everyday for a while, until we got sick of each other and went our separate ways. Which was fine with me, more then three or four hours at a time with her was too much. Her endless chatter and mindless story were enough to make anyone with half a brain scream for mercy. I also found it odd she didn't once go see Myles. Nor did he come to see her. They seemed to have had such a great interest in each other before.
At the end of week one her wonderful visit I woke up in the middle of the night from a bad dream. The dark clouds were looming over head again, I could feel it. I gazed at Malinda’s cot, it was empty. I waited up for hours and hours for her. She didn't come back from where ever she was. Soon lead coated my eye lids and I was fast asleep.

Myles, Twenty.

I couldn't stand it anymore, one more minute of there banter would of sent me over the edge. I turned and away I went. The house seemed like the place to go, but instead I ran behind the house. I hadn't been behind there in such a long time. I guess I stopped going behind there when I no longer found the swing set amusing. I walked over to the pile welded steal - possibly now a death trap- and sat down on a swing. Things weren't going the right way at all. I had it all planned, it look so wonderful in my head. What went wrong already? I lowered my head in defeat. We were just too different now, I had to realized that.
I heard something and glanced up. It was Malinda. She looked upset. What she was upset about what beyond me. Men were throwing themselves at her feet here, she had an already wonderful life back where she lived. What could she possible be feeling bad about? "Cindy, can I come swing with you?" she said in a small voice. "It's a free country." I said and looked back at the ground. "Cindy, I know you are mad. We both should have left when you said, it wasn't right of me to stay. I am your guest, I have to remember that." I was silent, "These swings have a lot of memories," she continued "we had a lot of fun on these swings. Hours and hours of pumping our legs to reach the impossible goal of flying over the top of the bar." She sighed deeply "Things aren't going to be the exact same, you and I both know that. We like different things now and have both changed," she pause and looked my way, "a lot. We will just have to stand each other for the next couple of weeks. And hey, if we get sick of each other we can just do our own thing. This place is huge it shouldn't be hard to do." she was right, whether we wanted to or not, we had to get along for weeks to come.

Myles, Nineteen.

We were about to pass Myles house. My heart beats accelerated, and so did I. I walked faster hoping to get that house out of my sights with out any trouble. Malinda fallowed right along side me, and unfortunately for me so did the source of my anguish. Myles stood on the far side of his house. I try to pass quickly, not looking at him. Malinda on the other hand wouldn't pass by as willingly. "Who is that?" She said, her eyes widening. "No one lets just keep walking." I looked at Myles for a moment. He had a big grin on his face, and when he saw the look of terror in my eyes, it grew bigger and his eyes became dark.
"Cindy! Cindy! Wait up!" I didn't wait of course, but Malinda did. Forcing me to stop too. "What do you want Myles?" I said as he approached. "I just wanted to say 'Hi'," he said in a shocked tone, "And to see who your friend is." he flashed Malinda a winning smile, and raising one eyebrow in curiosity. She shot him a flirtatious grin back. "I'm Malinda," she said stepping forward and putting out her hand ever so slightly, forcing him to step even closer to her to shake her hand. I thought she said she had a boyfriend... How odd. "I'm Myles," Their eyes were locked for a long moment. For some reason it made me furious. Maybe it was because I hated Myles, maybe it was because my best friend was making goo goo eyes at him. Whatever the reason, I was mad.
I grabbed Malinda's arm, but trying with all my might to pull her away from the heathen, but it wasn't good enough. She didn't budge, not even an inch. Then she shot me a dirty look then glance sweetly back at Myles. "Malinda it's time to go." I said tugging on her arm again. She pulled her arm away violently, "What is wrong with you?! Stop acting like this!" She said in a horse whisper. Stop the way I'm acting! How dare she say that to me. She told me he sounded like a psycho and to stay away from him. And yet here she was batting her eyes and giggling at everything distasteful word that oozed out from between his lips.

Myles, Eighteen.

When I got back down stairs Malinda was still talking. I stood in the doorway for a moment, then with a heavy sigh, went in. "So what do you want to do today?" I asked, interrupting her in mid-sentence. "I was thinking we could stay-" "I think we should go to the mall or something. It'll be so much fun. We can catch up, do a little shoping, and maybe see some people we know." We know? Right... more like you remember, I hate.
"I'm feeling a little bloated from the juice, do you want to take a walk before we go?" I agreed reluctantly. Our walked started slowly, her chattering away. We past the path to my favorite spot by the tree, and then the path to the pond. She has ended her story and we walked in silence. How awkward it all was. I might as well have been walking next to a complete stranger. I had to put in an effort though. I didn't want her to think I had changed for the worse. "How does it feel to be back?" I asked her, glancing over at her. "It feels good. I missed all of this. The air, the trees, the leafs, I even missed you." She said with a short laugh and then bumped me with her arm in a joking manner. I smiled, shaking my head. "You missed this? Your crazy, I think the city has corrupted you." I said smirking at the end.

Myles, Seventeen.

They noticed me standing there and their conversation stopped. "Hello dear," my mother said while giving me a warm smile. "Good morning, Cindy." Sue said, continuing the morning greeting. "Morning." I said weakly. I didn't even bother making eye contact as i walked by. I just went right to the refrigerator to get the eggs and bread. I wasn't looking at my mother but i was sure she was shaking her head in disapproval of my appearance and manners.
I scrambled the eggs and toasted the bread. A little burnt, but it still smelt nice. Just as i was setting the plates on the table Malinda appeared in the doorway fully dressed. That surprised me. I remembered when we were younger and we would stay in our Pjs all day. Sometimes we go out like that. My mom would bring us to places all the time. We would march right into a store or into the movies. People gave us odd looks of course, but we never cared.
"Morning Malinda," I said as I set her plate down, "I made eggs and toast for breakfast." She gazed at the table for a moment then walked over and sat down. "Could i just have some orange juice?" She asked. She didn't even make eye contacted with me. I sighed and poured her a glass of juice. My mother and Sue sensed the tension between us. "So, Malinda, how have things been for you lately?" My mother asked her. Malinda looked up from her juice, took a deep breath and then whipped a big smile on her face. Fake, i thought to myself.
She started rambling on and on about how her life was going, about her boyfriend, and about her new friends and school. I excused myself and went up stairs to change. Black dress, black boots, black hat. Same old, same old. Maybe that’s how I expected Malinda to be. I should have never assumed anything, but I did and now I was disappointed. Peachy. She became the kind of person I hated. The kind of people who are so bored with there own lives that they have to find ways to metal in others.

Myles, Sixteen.

When we got home things got better. Although the rain was pouring outside, inside we were laughing and talking as we looked through the old photo album of us. My parents weren't home that night, they were out on there once in a blue moon dinner and dancing. So we had the house to ourselves. We made a mac n' cheese and then went to bed. She was very tired from her long trip, and I understood that, so i didn't put up a fight. We did decided however that were we going to get up in early in the morning.
When i woke up the next morning Malinda still lied asleep on the cot. I wasn't surprised, she must of been getting use to the time change. I crept down stairs still in my pajamas, all ready to make breakfast. The kitchen wasn't empty though, my mother and Sue sat there sipping coffee and talking. I looked around slowly. Myles wasn't there.
I use to think that my home was safe. It was my castle and I was the princess. Nothing bad could lay a finger on me. The walls were build so high and so mighty that only a bulldozer could break it down. And even then my parents would keep me out of harms ways. That wasn't the case anymore though. Someone got passed the castle gates, and passed all the guards. They broke through our walls and snuck under our fences. Who is this master mind who had done this you ask? It is but a 17-year-old boy. His intentions I do not know, but I knew this, he was not a good person. When it boils down to it, that was the simplest way to describe him.

Myles, Fifteen.

She didn't know it was me. Could i have changed that much? I wanted to be mad at her for not knowing me for who i was, her best friend. Instead i went up to her and said in my, you are so stupid tone, "You really couldn't tell it was me?". "Oh my god!" she screeched and wrapped her arms around me. I embraced her back and soaked up the feeling of having a friend again. For a moment, it felt like everything was back to how it was.
"You looks so nice, Malinda." I said with a real smile on my face. It wasn't forced or fake... it was real. The kind of smile that could warm up a room, as my mother always said. "You look... you look... um... wonderful." Her smile was forced, I could tell right away. Seeing her smile like that at me almost brought a tear to my eye. How could she think that i wouldn't see the lies flooding from her. Her eyes and her smile gave it all away.
I gave her a half smile, I thought that was all she deserved... for now. We got her bags and put them in the car, then left. The ride home was horribly quiet and made me uncomfortable. The twists and the turns didn't seem fun anymore. They were back to normal, and so was I. I wasn't happy to see my old friend. I felt bad of course, but what was i suppose to do? Tell her to stop acting like I had on a mask. Right as those thoughts crossed my mind, droplets of rain began to hit my wind shield.

Myles, Fourteen

Three traffic lights, nine stop signs, and 1 yield later i pulled into the bus station. I parked the car and turned it off. Sighing i stepped out. I found an empty bench and took a seat. There was a little old women with snow white hair sitting on the bench adjacent to me. Slightly hunched over, she held a wooden cane in one hand and the other lay over the top of her cream colored purse.
She then looked over at me and gave me a warm, friendly smile. I shot a half smile back at her, and he acknowledged it with a nod, then turned back. Where was her bus, i thought. I looked at my watch, it was 10:30, her bus should be getting here in 15 minutes. That 15 minutes felt like they were lasting forever, but at the same time counting down too quickly.
What if she had changed? Changed so much that we have nothing in common? What if we end up hating each other because we are so different. No, I couldn't think of this. It made me sad, and plus it made me want to hop back into the car and floor it out of there. So, I just sat. I sat there and didn't think, thinking about one thing led to another and then to another and then i started to over think, making everything in to a big mess.
I looked at my watch again. 10:43, I sighed heavily. Two minutes. I bite my lower lip, a bad habit i had developed over the years. The old women still sat on the bench, the bus station was still empty other then us, and the sun still was blazing over head. Then slowing but surely Bus number 36 pulled in and opened the doors. Three people got off, then four more, then two. I waited a second. None of them were Malinda.
Then, just when my confusion started turning into panic she bounded off the bus. She carried a pink and blue hand bag, that she wore over her shoulder. She had on clear jelly flip flops, a pair of pre-ripped dreams, and a pink T-shirt that read, Chick in Charge. Her hair was still the color of sand, but now it looked high lighted and was shorter. She looked around the platform with bight eyes. Searching person to person for a face she recognized. Her eyes came to mine. I smiled, and she raised he eyebrow. Then continued looking for me.

Myles, Thirteen

The next morning I was woke up around 6, even though i didn't have to leave until 10. I couldn't help it though, i was bouncing off the walls all morning. I didn't even get dressed. I was just prancing around the house making a total idiot of myself. I didn't care, i was happy. H-A-P-P-Y, happy. For in a few hours i would be reunited with my long lost friend. During my prancing session i found an old album with picture of her and i when we were young. It was the prefect thing for us to look through together, i decided. I checked the clock, 9:15. It was time to shower and get dressed. I chose a black skirt with lace around the bottom and the matching top that have lace around the bottom and the collar. Then i pulled a sweater on and zipped it up. I did that as quickly as i could and i hopped into my moms car and left.
The drive to the Bus station wasn't too long. It was actually somewhat relaxing. I hadn't driven for months, but its just like riding a bike... you never forget. The leaves shook as the lower branches brushed the roof of the car. I whipped around a tight corner. I was moving with the wind now, and the trees clamors as I flew by. I was entering town, the trees evaporated and were replaced by buildings. People hurried about the sidewalks going and coming from work, dates, meetings, and whatever other things they all busied themselves with.

Myles, Twelve

The next two weeks flew by. I baby sat Chris a couple of times, slept a lot, and read a lot. Most importantly, i stayed away from that terrorist Myles. I didn't talk to, see, or think of him for two glorious weeks. It was almost like my life was back to normal. I loved every minute of it, and to top it all off i got a call from my best friend Malinda called me and asked if she could come up for a visit. She had moved away 3 years ago and i missed her everyday. That day that she called me we talk for hours. She told me about her new friends, and how none of them were as great as me. She carried on about her boyfriend and how wonderful he was. Then she stopped and asked me about what was happening in my life. I thought for a second. I had nothing, it was like i was stuck in a time warp. Ever since she left, my life froze. She was going to come back to the hum drum like she once left and want to leave again, i thought. All i could think of was the new neighbors.
I told her about Sue and Christopher, about how i loved Chris as if he were my own brother. I told her how Sue was nice and she was defiantly going to meet her. Then i paused, should i tell her about Myles? "Cindy?" she paused "Cindy you still there?" "Uh, yeah. I was just thinking sorry." i said hoping she wouldn't catch my troubled tone. "Something wrong?" I knew i couldn't get away with it. I sighed and started in on my discoveries about Myles. The day i met him, him saying horrible things to me, then turning around and being nice. How he pushed me in a puddle, and laughed about it. "This guy sounds like a real psycho Cind, you stay away form him." "Your telling me." We said our good byes and she mentioned again that she would be there in two days, and to make sure to clean my room.
The day before her arrival i set up a cot next to my bed. I was already happier then i had been in years. Being alienated from my peers never really made me smile form ear to ear. Darkness enclosed around my house quickly, and the stars trickled across the sky. I said goodnight to my parents, took a shower, and gave my window a glance. My eyes locked on the old house. Rage grew with in me. Simply thinking about what trouble Myles could cause while Malinda was here made my blood boil. He wasn't going to ruin this, not if his life depended on it. Sleep didn't come easily that night, but after some tossing and turning i was deeply dreaming, awaiting the appearance of my dear friend.

Myles, Eleven.

My mother and i when inside the house. She went to the kitchen to start on dinner and i went off to find my father. I found him sitting in the living room with the news paper up in front of him. I use to love sitting with him while he read the paper. I would sit with him for hours and hours, while he read every word, every paragraph, every page. "Hello dad." i said quietly. He looked over his paper at me and gave me a tender smile, "Hi hunny, what's up?" he asked. "Nothing just wanted to say goodnight." "Oh, your going to bed? But we haven't had dinner yet." "I know but i really tired, its ok isn't it?" I said with pleading eyes. "Of course it is sweetie, goodnight." I leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek, then head of my room for a nice nights sleep.
I wanted to sleep in the next day, but my mother just wouldn't have it i suppose, because she was pounding on my door yelling for me to get up. "I'm up, I'm up, I'm up." i wailed as i was pulled from my slumber. I decided i wanted to go for a run, even though i wasn't big on the idea of running i still felt like i needed to go. I found a pair of blue jean shorts and a black T-shirt with some bleach stains on it. I eyed it for a second, but put it on anyway. I didn't know if i actually had any sneakers but i look for a bit and found an old pair in the corner of my room, then i went down stairs to find my mother. She said it was ok with her, she just made me promise to eat when i got back.
I started out the front door. It was an over cast day and rain was coming soon. I could smell it in the air. The road was littered with puddles. I continued non the less. I passed the path to my favorite spot, and the path to the pond. I was closing in on the old house down the road. It rose before me as i got closer and closer. Standing there quietly and still unnoticed, just as it always had. My foot steps carried me passed it, just like they had taken me from my house and passed the paths. I didn't look back, i kept my pace steady. I was half way to the road when my silence was interrupted.
I heard a roaring noise coming from Myles house. It grew louder, then stopped. I stopped running and listened. The noise began once again and this time with louder then before. The sound grew and grew, then i saw where this sound was coming from. Myles charged down the drive way. He was on a shabby looking four wheeler and it didn't look as if he were going to slow down. I had stopped running and was watching him doughnuts. Me standing there must of caught his eye for a second, because he stopped spinning in the sand and gazed at me. I blinked at him and then i turned back to my jogging course. I heard the motor rev, and i knew he was coming up behind me. I don't know how i knew, but i did. I ran faster, not that it made a difference. He had an engine, and i had a pair of legs.
I wasn't watching where i was going now. Every other step my foot landed in a puddle and my shoes were getting soaked. Right as a jumped over a massive puddle, a heard the engine rev once again. I stopped and turned to find Myles coming right at me. He was going full speed, then at the last minute he went off to the side, curved behind me completely drenching my back. Then passed me on his way back around. Unfortunately for me he came to close for my comfort and i fell backwards into the huge puddle. I heard a snicker pass over his lips and with that last sound from him, he revved the motor and was gone.
I sat in the sullied trench. I was cold, wet, and then to top it all off... the rain started to come down. It poured from the sky as if buckets were being dumped from the clouds. I screamed and splashed my fists into the water. Dirty water droplets splattered on to my face. I ground my fists deeper into the soft mud in the bottom of the puddle. Great day, i thought sarcastically.

Myles, Ten.

The next morning i woke up feeling like i was about to collapse. Why i was so tired was beyond me. After my morning routine i went down stairs. No one was home though, my mother must of been at the store or out with one of her friends. I looked around the kitchen for a note and found one on the refrigerator.

AT SUES, WHEN YOU WAKE UP EAT SOMETHING THEN COME ON OVER.
LOVE, MOM.

I wasn't going to go over there of course. Instead i decided to fixed myself a turkey sandwich and then after eating i went up stairs. Just as i was lying on my bed the phone rang, with my eye shut i felt for the phone on my night stand. I picked it up, "Hello Dean residents.". "Oh Hello, hunny." my mothers voice sang. "Hi mom, why are you calling? I hope its not because i didn't come over there because i'm not really up to it today." "Oh that's not it at all," she answered quickly. "Sue and i want to go shopping and i was wondering if you would watch Christopher for the afternoon." there was a long pause "Myles refused to do it and Sue is willing to pay you 5 dollars an hour." She added with a hopeful sound in her voice. With a sigh i agreed to it, why not let my mother have a nice day with a new friend, i bet Sue would like it to.
About 15 minutes later they dropped Christopher off and left. He just stood there wide eyed looking around at all the junk that had collected in my house over the course of the last 18 years or so. I noticed how short he was, he looked to young to be 6 but was. Myles and him looked nothing alike. Christopher had golden locks and blue eyes, just like a little angel would have. "Christopher, are you hungry?" i asked him hoping that would keep him busy for a while. He nodded and him and i went to the kitchen to make something.
"What do you want to eat?" He pointed to a box of cereal on the counter. I got a bowl and the milk out. When i started to pour the cereal into the bowl in a small voice he said "Can i help?". He up at me and blinked several times. I couldn't help it, i smiled a wide warm smile at him and he smiled back. I was a great feeling to. So together we made his food and then he ate it, giggling and smiling the whole time. After he finished i cleaned up, washing all his spoon and bowl.
"Can we go outside?" he asked with a hope in his voice. He gave me another wide smile. How could i say no to that? "Sure." i said. We started for the front door, as i stepped out i noticed that he wasn't next to me anymore. I looked back at the door, i saw he was just standing in the door way. "What's wrong?" i asked tilting my head. He frowned and his eyebrows went up slightly. His hand extended in the air. I smiled again, this amazed me. This little boy made smile after smile come from my lips. On top of that he wanted me to hold his hand as we walked. When you young you don't see how people dress or look, you see how inside of them. Whether they are a good person or not. You see them as a protector. I went back for him, wrapped my fingers around his little hand, and we were gone.
The breeze felt good as we were walking down the path to the pond on the far side of the field. It was a long walk but it was worth it. I didn't think he minded though. He pointed to things and asked what they were, asked me questions about my house and family, and told me about his family. I found out that his father had died in a car crash. Myles and him were driving one rainy night and there car crashed. Myles was banged up pretty bad but there father had die. This all horrified me. Something like this coming from the mouth of a 6 year olds mouth. Then he told me this happened when he was only 1. He didn't remember his father, so it wasn't hurtful at all for him to talk about.
"Look Christopher." I said pointing to a bird that was landing on the pond, now only 60 yards in front of us. That was enough for him to stop talking about his father and what happened all those years ago. Now he was staring at the water and tugging on my arm to go faster. I quicken my pace to match his or to keep him from ripping my arm clear out of the socket, which ever it was we got there a little sooner. I sat on the grass while he played in the water closest to me. "Christopher, don't go on to the dock." i hollered at him as he stepped his foot onto one of the worn wooden boards of the dock. I hadn't been on it since i was young, for all i knew he would of fallen right through.
He moseyed over to me and sat down. He didn't see what his brother saw, to be young was a great thing. "You know," he began, "only mommy calls me Christopher. You can call me Chris if you want to." Then he cupped his hand over his mouth and whispered "I don't really like being called Christopher anyway." Then he looked around as is someone might have been listening to his confession. "Ok Chris" i said. He flashed me a wide beaming smile. The simplest things brought young children so much joy. Sometimes i wished i could still feel that way. To be 6 and care free. You don't know what's going on between your parents, in the money department, or anything else. Little things were all you needed to brighten your day, like finding a marble in the dirt or having your favorite food for lunch. What happened to that simplicity inside of everyone, i thought.
I heard a creek coming from the dock. My thoughts were shattered and my gaze shot up. Chris had gotten up when i was deep in thought and ran over to that old dock. He only got to the third plank but i decided that was far enough. "Christopher, I'm not telling to stay off that dock again." Disappointed he got off the dock and sat by the water fiddling in the sand. It got late quickly, so we started to head back. This time before we started walking i held out my hand. He willing grabbed it and grinned at me. The walk felt just as long as it did on the way there, but the sun was setting so it was gorgeous enough to make up for it.
As we walked into the drive way our mothers pulled up. "Did you guys have fun?" Sue asked Chris. "Mommy, Cindy took me for a walk to the pond and we saw a bird and it landed on the pond. We made food and i helped mommy." He rambled on like that for a while. Then she loaded him in the car, handed me 20 dollars and thanked me. She didn't have to, it was fun, I thought to myself. "So Cindy, you never answered. Did you have fun?" My mother asked me. "Yes mom, i did. Chris is a really great kid." She smiled. I was odd for me to like someone right off the bat, but what could i say he was a great kid. Unlike his brother.

Myles, Nine.

The smile rested on my face for a long time, longer then i really wanted it to in fact. Something caught my eye and turned my head toward the old house. There i saw Myles staring in my direction, the smile was wiped from my face instantly. Why was he staring at me, i thought. No, i didn't care. I got up and walked to the other side of the tree that was near where i was sitting. Plopping myself down i began fuming. What a cretin, he was making a total ass of himself. The dunderhead fool most likely didn't know his left from his right.
I heard foot steps, there was someone coming. I got up and hind behind the tree. Myles stepped into the clearing, he just stood there gazing around. I realized then i had never really taken a good look at him. When we first met earlier that day i didn't actually look at him, i just insulted him and then he made of a fool of himself. When we were in the attic i avoided his eyes the best i could. I admit, he was good looking. Chestnut brown hair like his mother, but his was curly while his mothers straight. I guessed that his father must have had curly hair. He looked like he had muscles but i couldn't really tell because he was wearing baggy clothes. His broad shoulders and height made him look like he could play football, for all i knew he did. I looked at his eyes, more like in his eye. The same eyes that glared at me so harshly before.
I guess i must of gotten lost in them, because he had noticed me peeking out behind the tree. He was staring right at me. I let out a small gasp and pulled myself out of his sight. "I know your there, i'm not as ignorant as i look. Isn't that how you put it?" I stood still. "Why are you even down here?" he continued, I pressed my body against the tree. Don't move an inch and he will go away. Don't move an inch, don't move an inch. This became my chant as i stood there still as stone.
My arm was suddenly seized and i was pulled from my hiding stop. I fell to my knees. Looking up i found Myles towering over me, his hand still clutched around my arm tightly. "Let me go!" i screamed, he loosened his grip but didn't let go. "Come on, let me help you up." he said extending his other arm to me. I eyeballed it for a moment, and declined his offer by ripping my arm away violently. I got up and walked away, I was done with him. Period.

Myles, Eight.

We stood in the kitchen together, she washed and i dried and put away. She went on about everything she had learned about our new neighbors. I only caught bits and pieces but i did find out some things. They had moved here from Texas, because Sues husband had died. She was looking for a new start. Hmm.. a new start, that would be nice. Move away and never look back. She continued on, and i found out that I was right, Myles was 17, only a year older then me. His little brothers name was Christopher and he was 6. My mother kept talking until we were finished with the dishes, then i bolted from the house.
I headed for my favorite spot on the field. Soft grass, perfect shade, and slightly hidden, what more could i want? Lying back in the grass felt so good. No worries, no cares, just relaxation. I sat on the ground and then lowered myself to my side. Almost instantly after closing my eyes i fell asleep. Dreams loomed around me, like small clouds. Some black with bad, dark things with in them. While others were soft and made me smile in my sleep. I was lucky that afternoon, my dreams were all sweet... yet they were sad at the same time. I dreamed of when i was young, and my mother, father, and I walked along the beach hand in hand. They were talking about something i didn't understand, but i didn't care. I just kept right on singing my little songs and doing little dances. They noticed that i was doing this and they stopped they conversation, and swung me. They swung me back and forth so easily, like i was made of feathers. I might as well have been, because i felt like it. I felt like i was flying up and touching the sky then coming back down again.
I woke up abruptly from my dream world to the sound of my dads car pulling in tot he drive way. I sat up and saw my mother coming out of the house to greet him. No matter how dysfunctional i acted, they were always ecstatic to see each other. I never effected there relationship, which i was happy about. It meant i could be myself with out any repercussion. They embraced one another. That brought a smile to my face. Mom always said that my smile could warm up a room, that is if i let it rest on my face for more then ten seconds.

Myles, Seven.

When got into the living room i paused and pointed to the floor. He noted this gesture and put the box down. We continued on into the kitchen where we all ate lunch. Our mothers chattered on and on. Other then the occasional nod or grunt Myles and I were quiet. Not even passing glances with each other, which was fine with me. Lunch ended and they all left. My mother said she would be by there tomorrow to help Sue unpack.

Myles, Six.

I pushed open the door, relieving my plain and melancholy room. "Does someone leave up here?" he asked me with a worried tone in his voice. I bet he thought we kept some unwanted child up here, to hind away from the world. I laughed to myself again, that sounded about right, an unwanted child hidden form the world. "Yes, this is my room. And before you ask me why i live up here I’ll tell you. I like quiet." I finished it at that, i was hoping that was all he needed to know, continuing the conversation would of just brought me more frustration. I heard him mutter something, i think it was 'Heh, quiet... right..'. I slipped pass him and went to the door, what was i doing? I'm not going to lock the door with him up here. Instead i shoved the key back in my pocket.
"Lets look for the box of toys." i said trying to speed things along. "I have an idea you look for it and i will wait on your bed." He plopped down on my bed and lied back folding his arms behind his head. I rolled my eyes and gave him a big impatient sigh, but reluctantly i went over to the boxes and began my search for the toys. After about five minutes for looking Myles started to talk. I paid no attention of course, i just kept up my expedition for the lost toys. "Cindy. Cindy, Cindy, Cindy. Cindy!" I looked at him, he was sitting up now and staring at me. "Are you deaf or something?! What the hell is wrong with you? I called your name like 57 times." He was by far one of the most unpleasant people i had ever met, i decided. He was still staring at me, maybe he was trying to see inside me. I was no open book, and someone like him was sure as hell not going to crack me. I stayed silent none the less.
He rolled his eyes, got up and knelt beside me. "So, what exactly are we looking for?" he asked. "We?" i quipped "When did it become more then just me?" He looked at me and tilted his head. Then shook it, "You really know how to get on a guys last nerves, you know that?". Only his, i thought. "Lets just look for the toys." I said and then did so. "Oh, i see how it is. Giving me the cold shoulder just because i tried to spray you with the hose." I got up, that remark was just plain stupidity. "Are you saying i have no right to be upset? You tried to get me soaking wet with a stream of cold water and you think i would be ok with that? You know, you are much more ignorant then you look. I shouldn't have to be up here with you listening to you whine and moan, but i am. Now stop talking to me, stop looking at me, don't even think about me. Just help me look for the right box so we can get out of here." I felt better, although i had just yelled at a strange. None the less i did feel better. With a sigh and started looking quickly through the rest of the boxes. I wasn't going to stay up here a minute longer. I worked in silence, Myles was waiting by the door impatiently.
After i found the box toys i walked over to him and held it out, with out hesitation he took it. I locked the door and we started back to the living room. Not one word was said between us, the tension was so thick i could of choked on it if i had taken a deep breath.

Myles, Five.

Myles sat back on the couch, he look relaxed but tense at the same time. His eyes were directed at the floor and he was tapping his fingers on his thighs very nervously. "Hey, get up we have to go up stairs." i said as if it were nothing being thrown in to a situation with someone i disliked. What seemed like out of no where he smirked and rose. "Wow, aren't we moving a little fast? I just met you, buy hey what ever floats your boat, baby.". I felt the blood rise to my face, i could of sworn my heart stopped for a second or two. Never had a heard such a crude and tasteless comment leak from the lips of a boy talking to me, if they talked to me at all that is. He must of saw how scarlet my face had turned, because he smiled again, but this time is was a wiry evil smile. It sent a chill up my spine and snapped me back form my state of total shock. "Are we going up stairs then?" he said and winked at me. I sighed and started walking toward the stairs, Myles followed four or five paces behind me.
I stopped at the bottom of the stair well. I guess he didn't notice that i had, because he smashed in to me. "What the hell are you doing now?" he said, obviously furious that i had wrecked his train of thought. "Stairs." i said pointing up ward, and then started for my room. He followed close behind, closer then i really wanted him too. Then i realized there was no light on, he couldn't see where he was going. I laughed silently to myself, maybe he was afraid of the dark. We got to the top, where i proceeded to unlock the door with my key. The only key actually, i always kept my door locked. When i left i locked it, when i went in i locked it. Maybe i was paranoid, maybe it was just habit. Not like i had anything to hide anyway. A bed, a dresser and a bookshelf. That's all there was, and of course all the old boxes that just had a bunch of junk in them.

Myles, Four.

I ran home as quickly as i could, but the boots i was wearing wouldn't let me get there very fast. Bursting through the door i hollered for my mother. After i found her, i told her that i had dropped the cake off, invited them for lunch and that they were coming soon. Then up to my room i scrambled, out of sight out of mind.... i hoped. I began to think about that boy, Myles. The names he called me, not that i wasn't use to it. People always called me names, around here i was different... and different was frowned upon. 'Hey freak!', 'melt you gothic mutant!'. How could someone say something like that to another human being and not feel ashamed of themselves. I looked out the window and saw them walking down the unpaved road. Flopping on my bed i pulled a pillow over my head and screamed as loud as i could. Let all your anger out, i told myself, be calm... be calm. I let out another scream, why did people have to move in.
"Cindy! Come down here please!" my mother called. With a heavy and drawn out sigh i got up. Down stairs i found them sitting in the living room. She was sitting in the over stuffed chair in the corner of the room, while Sue and the two boys sat on the couch. "Hello." i said with a forced smile. Sues younger son, whom i still hadn't learned the name of was wiggling and fidgeting. My mother must of noticed too because she suddenly suggested that i go up in my room/attic and get the old box of toys that i use to play with when i was little. "Please don't go to any trouble." Sue commented. "Oh its no trouble at all." she said with a cheery smile. "Well at least have Myles go along with her to help her carry it down." I shot my mother a look that cried 'No please let me go alone! I will do anything!' but she ignored it and agreed. Sue and my mother decided to go in the kitchen and finish lunch while we were up stairs, and with that dissuasion they were gone.

Myles, Three.

I got to the front door and paused, i had never been this close to the house before. I saw it when i passed walking home from school, and i saw it from my window, but other then that it never really mattered much. Now people lived here and i would have to acknowledge it as and actually house, and not just an eye sore. I knocked softly, listened then knocked slightly harder. A woman in her early forties opened the door, she have chestnut hair the was pinned back and she was wearing old looking clothes. I decided she must of been cleaning the house and moving things around. "Hello there." she said with a big smile on her face, then cocked her head to the side with a look of confusion. "Hi, I’m Cindy. I live next door, my mother sent me over here to give you this cake and to invite you to lunch." I said and then gave her the best smile i could manage out. "Well," she said with another smile. "its nice to meet you Cindy, I'm Sue. Fallow me dear, " she said and started walking away from the front hallway, throw the living room, into the dinning room and then stopping in the kitchen. "set that right there Hun. There are knifes and plates in that box right over there and if you don't mind i am going to go awake up my son from his nap." I gave her a nod and she was off.
I set the cake on the island in the middle of the kitchen, and went for the knifes and plates in the box. It was rather dark and gloomy in there, there also wasn't really any light except for a tiny bit creeping in between the cracks in the closed curtains. After searching for a good five minutes i found what i was looking for. I tried to bring them to the sink to wash but no water came out of the faucet, so i set them on the counter along with the cake. I looked around for a light switch but saw none, so i went to open the curtains. "Who the hell are you?" I heard someone snap behind me. I turned around to find a young man about my age standing there. With out missing a beat i calming said "I could ask you the very same question." He raised his eyebrow, opened his mouth in anticipation of speaking... but didn't. I turned back around and opened the curtains, letting in a beam of light.
"Hey freak!" He practically screamed at me, i turned slowly to find he had pulled the hose through the double doors and was now holding it ready to fire a stream of water at me. What he didn't know was that the water was shut off. I controlled my smirks and smug little giggles and said "I dare you to." He took a step forward, but i refused to budge. I folded my arms and stood my ground, i wasn't about to let some little waste-of-space think that i was scared of him. "Fine you give me no other choice," He said calmly then jumping backwards screamed "MELT YOU GOTHIC MUTANT!" He pulled the hose nozzle... but nothing happened. He pulled again, and again, and again. Panicked now he looked around the kitchen like a frightened rabbit during hunting season. "Now if you don't mind." i said and spun around to finish cutting the cake up.
Sue strolled in with a little boy on her hip, she gazed around the room. I saw the look of confusion oh her face when she saw the hose laying on the floor. "What was going on here? Myles? Do you know what was going on here?" she questioned, realizing he was frozen in place she turned her questioning to me, "Cindy, do you know?". "No ma'am i was just cutting some cake like you told me to, i didn't even hear anything until you came in" i said coolly. "Oh," she said with a smile, then grew serious again "Myles bring that hose outside and then we are going over to Cindy's house for lunch." I was a bit shocked that she was actually going, maybe it was to spite Myles. "Well, if you are going to come over then i better head home to tell my mother how many people are coming, three is it?" "Yes." she grinned at he little boy in her arms. I left the house without another word.

Myles, Two.

I woke up in the late morning to some horrible noise coming from out side. I was still tired so i tried to force myself back to sleep. After drifting in and out of sleep for an hour or so, i pulled myself out of bed to get dressed. I chose a nice black dress that stopped just above my knees, and i threw on a black sweatshirt over it. Then groped under my bed for my boots, slipped them on and headed for the bathroom. I finished getting ready as quickly as i could and ran down stairs to the kitchen.
There I found my mother pulling a cake out of the oven, i poured myself a glass of milk and then slipped into a chair. My mother turned around and set the cake on the table, and in a sing-song voice she said "We have new neighbors, they moved in the old house just down the way." She put her fingers over her mouth and tapped them nervously for a few seconds, "You should change in to something more colorful dear, you look so much more friendly when you do." Oh no, she wanted me to wear colors? That could only mean one thing... she was planning for me to leave the house and see people. How dare she waste my summer vacation socializing with people. "Now i want you too take this cake over next door, and invite them for lunch" she said, dipping her finger into the cake she just frosted.
Before i knew what was happening she put the cake into my arms and pushed me out the door. Great, just great. How can my day being going this badly this early? Hell, i just woke up and got dressed, why should i have to do this? With a big sigh and my temples pounding from shear frustration, i started walking. My mother just has to be Miss Susie Homemaker, these people were going to think i was some kind of freak. Wait, what was i saying? When have i ever cared about what people thought of me, and these people were strangers. I quickened my pace, i was just going to get this over with. No need to prolong unpleasant things.

Myles, One.

I lied in the grass with my eyes closed and my hand folded behind my head. There was something about the summer that could make me stay out side for hours on end just listening and thinking.
My mother never really liked it, she was sure I would get kidnapped or something like that. But nothing like that ever happened around here, actually nothing ever happened period. You see i live in the middle of the woods. Actually, i lived on the top of a hill and there was a huge field surrounding it, then past that were woods. I had no neighbors, which was fine with me, i never was a social butterfly.
There was one house down the road a bit, i could see it from my bed room window. No one lived there though, it was run down and looked as if it would cave in on its self if someone should step inside it. My dad said it was an eye sore and should be torn down. 'What will Cindy's friends think if they see that old thing standing there?' My mother always said. Ha ha Mommy Dearest, shows what you know i don't have any friends, i thought to myself.
It was getting dark and i headed inside. We all sat down and ate dinner together like we always did and then i took my nightly shower and went to bed. Right before i got into bed i took one last look at the old house, it sat there so quietly, so unnoticed. I laughed to myself, it was just like me.

Hallway

The hallway was dimly lit. He had to wince to see his watch. 9:36. He has been told to come at 9:00. Patients had never been his strong point. He hadn’t once heard a sound from behind the door at the end of the hallway. Not a peep. Whoever was in there taking up his time was in for it when they came out. He checked again. 9:40. Why was it taking so long? He hadn’t come early enough to see who had the appointment before his.
The door knob jiggled. He positioned himself in the middle of the hallway, wanting a good look at who was about to exit. But the door didn’t open, there was silence again. Suddenly someone burst from the room. She stopped short in front of him. She was very pale with dark circles under her eyes, as if she hadn’t slept in days. Vampire, he thought. Her hair wasn’t black though, it was golden, wavy and nearly to her waist. He also noticed that the only skin she had showing were her hands and face. She fidgeted, the turtle neck and jeans she wore seemed to make her feel uncomfortable.
She looked away from him, taking a half step to the side. Not quite enough room to get by. “Out of my way, bloodsucker.” He hissed as he slammed into her shoulder. With a small gasp she fell to the floor, brushed out of the way like a piece of lint. He looked down at her and smiled slightly, pleased with himself. As he strode forward toward the door, she reached out and grabbed his hand. Then everything went black.
When he opened his eyes he was laying flat on his back. As quickly as he could, he jumped off the bed and scoped the room for life. She was sitting the armchair with her knees pulled to her chest. “You shouldn’t be so rude, Shadowhunter.” It had been the first time he had ever heard her speak. Her voice was flat. “Where have to taken me?” His fists were clenched. “I didn’t take you anywhere. This is where you took us. So, you tell me where we are.” Her words didn’t make sense to him. He stepped toward her, which is when he noticed he she was no longer in her turtle neck and jeans. Now she had on shorts and a blue tank top. He looked around and took in the room. “But how did you bring me here, this was my room when I was a child.” She put her legs down and stood up. “I told you, I did not bring you here, you did. And it isn’t your room, it is your mind. You must have brought us here because you find it safe.” She was beginning to become annoyed with him. “My…mind?” He was shaking his head now as he stepped back from her.

Green Dream

My eyelids felt like lead. I was awake, but I just couldn't manage to open them. Just then, I realized I couldn't remember anything. The last thing I remember was seeing a big green house, and then falling down. Where was I now? Then I heard a slight whisper.
"I think she is waking up.... Shoo." said a woman’s voice very softly.
"What?! Why?!" Said a mans voice a bit louder and much harsher.
"Because I said, now go!" footsteps tromp away.
I finally found the energy to open my eyes. I was met by the face of an older woman. Maybe as old as my mother, but she was smiling. Almost like she was happy to see me, but I could see worry in her eyes. Her worry worried me. I tried to get up, I honestly tried my hardest to lift myself out of the strange bed I was in, but I couldn't move. "Where... where am I?" My voice was horse. The women smiled again at me, then she lifted a cup of water to my lips. Getting it down was hard, my throat was so dry.

Down the Hall

The shattered glass on the floor reflected the light that shone through the dirty window where he sat. He replayed the morning’s events in his mind for the hundredth time.
“Mrs. Springs, I’m sorry to drag you down here so early, but this matter is of some urgency.” Scott sat there, prepared for some random accusation. His mother nodded slightly, the principal continued. “Scott has been suspended several times this year, has had more detentions assigned to him then are worth counting, and has been sent out of class at least once a day since the first day of the year.” He then looked at Scoot, maybe he expected him to say or do something to protest his innocents. Scott stayed silent. “I’m sorry to tell you this Mrs. Springs but Scott is in trouble once again. There has been a chain of vandalizations within the last few weeks. Each getting increasingly worse in damages. We have eye witnesses putting Scott at every one of those crimes that have damaged our beautiful school.” Scott didn’t flinch; he didn’t care if they knew he did it. Probably better that they know, he thought.
His mother didn’t look the least bit surprised, yet at the same time you could see disappointment in her eyes.
“Because of the extensive damage to the school, Mrs. Springs, I am going to have to expel your son.” These were harsh word, but now that they were said they were set in stone. However Scott wasn’t thinking about his situation, he was thinking about how he didn’t like the way that man said his mother’s name. This was yet another sad day for the Springs family, but not a totally unexpected one.
The glass crackled under his sneakers as he stepped out of the empty room. Blue glass trailed along behind him as he walked back down the hallway. How do you feel Scott Springs? You have done the worst, and how you are out of school for good. You’re lucky you didn’t land yourself in jail. He scolded himself.
He felt someones presents in the door. It was his mother, just standing there, looking at her son. Scott laid on his bed silently. What happed to my baby boy? Silvia Spring thought to herself as she stood there. Why can't he just be happy like he use to be? With that final thought she left.
"BYE MOM!" Scott yelled. He looked over at the picture on his desk of a picture of his mom and him when he was little. She looked so young, so full of life... his father had taken that picture. It was a warm summer day out. His parents had taken him to that park for a family outting. He was only five then. A child. What a fool I was to sit on that swing with my mother and pose for that picture. I should have been difficult and ran away.
As he thought about this picture, there came a knock at the front door. He listened for a moment, the knock came a second time. Get the door mom. The knock came for a third time. Scott pulled himself up off his bed and hurried down the stair. Another knock came just as he was opening the door. The door flew open and a women fell into his arms.
"I am so sorry, I was just knocking and the door open to suddenly. The sign says you have a room for rent?" She was beautiful, no, more like perfect. Scott gawked at her, eyes wide, and jaw slack. "There is a room for rent here, right?" He didn't know what to say, he didn't know how to deal with this. She pulled herself out of his arms and smiled warmly. Without a word he went to the kitchen to get his mother. Leaving the strange women standing there in the doorway.
"Mom, there is a women in at the door."
"Did you let her in?" She asked as she was drying off a fork.
"No, I told her to go away because she looked like a hooker."
"What?!" That got her attention.
"She is in the front hallway" then he left. He went out the other door of the kitchen, the led to the other set of stairs. He wanted a better look at this women. Not that he didn't get a pretty good look at her while she was in his arms, but he wanted to study her. Scott snuck to the top of the front stairwell, he lingered there, watching his mother and the stranger talk.
She was breath taking, at least to Scott. Her chestnut brown hair neatly comb, it framed her face nicely, making her look younger then really was. On the floor there sat a black suit case, and in her hand was a red umbrella. He saw a hint of grey in her eyes, or maybe it was a steely blue. Either way, her dress and hat matched the color of her eyes. He liked that. He liked that she matched.
The conversation between his mother and the beautiful stranger ended, and she headed for the stairs where Scott watched from. He fled to his room. Scott felt exhilarated, he wanted to see thing women again. He wanted to see how she moved, how she slept, how she ate, how her skin felt. He sat in his bedroom for hours, thinking about her. He didn't even know her name, but he knew she was special.
That night he crept from his room. He moved silently down the hallway to the room that had been empty that morning. The room he sat in and pondered. The room that had blue glass from the vase he had smashed that after noon. He opened the door to her bed room. There was furniture in there now, a night stand, a lamp, a dresser, and a bed. A bed that held the body of a beautiful stranger.
He took a step toward her, she did not stir. She looked like a doll, a china doll with skin of glass. He took another step. He wanted to touch the glass skinned doll. She looked flawless, no blemishes, no childhood scar, not even a wrinkle. He reached out to touch her face, then recoiled. No, look, don't touch. But he had to touch her, he had to just once, then he would be fine. He had to make it count. Scott leaned into her slowly. Careful, careful. His lips touched her warm cheek. It was for but a brief moment, yet for him it lasted forever. He felt like all the happiness in the whole world was surging from her cheek into his lips.
Then it was over, and he was back in his bed room. His skin was covered in goose bumps, and he was trembling slightly. That was enough, enough for now at least.

Romantic Evening

She leaned in kissing him softly. I hate you, she thought, but right now there are others I hate more, lying to herself. She wore crimson lip stick that night, knowing it would tempt him, draw his lips to hers. And that’s what it did, it tugged gently at him. Taunting him, making him want her more with every breath.
Before he could pull away she slid her hand up the inside of his thigh. He drew in his breath sharply, first from of the sensation of her caressing hand, then from the sharp tip of her knife penetrating the soft flesh surrounding his rib cage. As she pulled her blade from his chest he fell toward her moaning quietly. Blood surged from his wound onto her dress. Shoving him to the floor she stood, and wiped the metal clean on her already stained evening gown.
She knelt beside him, and tenderly touched his cheek. His breathing was growing more labored. Something like a smile crossed her lips. “Soon,” she whispered “there really will be others I hate more.” That said, she stood to take her leave. As her finger tips touched the door knob, she turned back to him for a moment. With that finial look, whether it had been from hatred or longing, she was gone.
